FAQ: Backup
When using powerDOCUMENTS a lot of valuable information is accumulated in the
powerDOCUMENTS database. Therefore this database should be backed up
in regular intervals.
What to back up:
- Database
The database contains all the internal texts (MyStructure texts),
titles, keywords, users, ...
If you are using SQLite or Jet database engine you will have to backup a
central database file.
The path of the database file depends on the OS language and can be
modified during installation. Path and name can be changed in the configuration
(ConfigKey: 'dbPath').
Backups must be taken at a time when the database is not accessed
by users.
For SQLite the default name is "powerDOCUMENTS.sdb" in the program directory
(usually "c:\Program Files\KLV\powerDOCUMENTS 2\powerDOCUMENTS.sdb").
For Jet / Access the default name is "powerDOCUMENTS.mdb" in the program directory
(usually "c:\Program Files\KLV\powerDOCUMENTS 2\powerDOCUMENTS.mdb").
If you are using MSDE / MS SQL Server database engine the database
is maintained by an independant database server.
See "Backup MSDE / MS SQL Server database"
for details.
- Attachments
Copying / backing up the database will not include the attachments.
All attachments have to be backed up separately. This is also true for
'Attachment Copy Mode'.
- Site Configuration
Normally this is the file 'Config.xml' in the program directory.
(usually "c:\Program Files\KLV\powerDOCUMENTS 2\config.xml").
- Style sheets
You should backup the style sheets in case you've made any changes.
Style sheets are the files named '*.css' in the program directory
(usually "c:\Program Files\KLV\powerDOCUMENTS 2\*.css").
There are serveral ways to backup a MSDE / MS SQL Server database.
One possible way to do this backup is:
- Shut down MSDE using the services applet
(Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services).
- Using Windows Explorer navigate to the SQL Server Data Directory
and make a backup copy of all files.
In a default installation (using MSDE, MSDE installed by
powerDOCUMENTS database conversion tool) this will be
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$PDOC\data" (Path depends
on OS language as well).
- Restart MSDE using the Control Panel.
Backups must be taken at a time when the database is not accessed
by users.
